Prediction Time: CFL.ca writers make their Week 9 picks

The Canadian Press

TORONTO — Whether you’re a CFL team, a Total CFL Pick ‘Em player or a CFL.ca writer, there’s a lot on the line, and all of it continues as Week 9 gets set in the Canadian Football League.

Week 9 sees three teams on bye weeks, leaving six to battle it out. Last week could easily be summarized as the week of ‘coulda, woulda, shoulda’, and there’s an eagerness to correct and fix one if not all of those leading into just about every game that’s on tap for this week.

Total CFL Pick ‘Em is back in 2018 with $5,000 to be awarded to the winner who’s able to Pick ‘Em better than all the rest.

EDM at BC

The BC Lions, when looking at it on paper, came the closest to defeating the undefeated Calgary Stampeders. Their nine-point margin of defeat was made possible by the fact they outscored the Stamps 15-10 in the second half. Now they have the Eskimos to prepare for to see just where they size up in the West with Travis Lulay at the helm.

The depth at receiver has been obvious. But last week, when Saskatchewan was focusing in on eliminating the damage caused by Duke Williams, that other top receiver from the Eskimos air attack was the one causing all the ruckus. You know, that Derel Walker guy?

Can the Lions afford to zero in on one guy, or do they have something no one’s thought of up their sleeve?

HAM at WPG

Matt Nichols was still on the injury list the last time these two teams squared off, and Chris Streveler was the talk of the league with his quick and immediate impact in his young rookie campaign. Winnipeg has still managed to find ways to include Streveler in their offence, which is otherwise being operated with Nichols calling signals from the pivot position.

It’s very much so a different team than what the Ticats saw over a month ago.

As for the Tabbies, they’re coming off of a confidence-boosting 50-11 victory over the Montreal Alouettes. Jeremiah Masoli looked good while getting everyone involved on offence, all while the defensive unit for Hamilton was causing headaches for Johnny Manziel and the Als.

Johnny Manziel appears to be maintaining his role as the Alouettes starting quarterback, and although his debut didn’t finish with French horns lining the tunnels of Percival Molson Stadium, there were signs of what earned Manziel a Heisman Trophy. Perhaps another week in the playbook, preparing as a starter can help settle his nerves.

As for the REDBLACKS, yup, they’re not happy after they let a lead slip away to the Argos, who went on to win their Week 8 meeting with a single second remaining in the game. Ottawa will be coming into this week with an eye for redemption.
