Bane of the Defence: Riders sign receiver

REGINA — The Saskatchewan Roughriders have signed American wide receiver Shawn Bane Jr., the team announced on Tuesday. 

Bane Jr. joins the Roughriders after a strong 2022 season for the Calgary Stampeders, where he matched or set career highs with 21 catches for 288 yards and one touchdown. On special teams, the 27-year-old speedster logged nine punt returns for 80 yards and seven kickoff returns for 156 yards.

In 2021, he saw action in four games, recording three catches for 100 yards and one touchdown. Bane also contributed on special teams, returning 16 punts for 182 yards and 7 kickoffs for 138 yards. The Florida native initially signed with the Stampeders in 2020.  

Bane played four collegiate seasons (2015-18) at Northwest Missouri State. He logged 212 catches for 3,363 yards and 31 touchdowns over 48 games. The former Bearcat contributed on special teams, returning 58 kicks for 1,286 yards and 74 punts for 878 yards and two touchdowns. Bane earned Second-Team All-MIAA honours as a receiver in all four seasons in addition to being named the MIAA Freshman of the Year and First-Team All-MIAA kick/punt returner in 2015.
