Roughriders climb up Nissan Titan Power Rankings

Matt Smith/CFL.ca

TORONTO — For the fifth week in a row, the Ottawa REDBLACKS sit on top of the Nissan Titan Power Rankings, despite losing their first game of the season. The hottest offence in the league suffered a major blow in Week 5 when leading passer Trevor Harris left the game with a leg injury. Will Harris be ready for next week? Or will the REDBLACKS look to a new pivot to lead them?

The Saskatchewan Roughriders won their first game of the season, defeating the REDBLACKS 30-29, but can they continue to rise up the Power Rankings? Meanwhile, the Tiger-Cats are also on the rise after their Week 5 victory over the Eskimos.

The Ottawa REDBLACKS were handed their first loss of the season courtesy of the Saskatchewan Roughriders in Week 5 but still remain on top of the Power Rankings. Brock Jensen took over for Trevor Harris after Harris left with an apparent leg injury, previewing what may be the near future for the REDBLACKS if Harris isn’t ready to return next week when they take on the Argos.

Both the defence and the offence, led by quarterback Bo Levi Mitchell, were impressive in the Stamps’ 33-18 victory over the Winnipeg Blue Bombers in Week 5, moving Calgary up one spot in the Power Rankings. Mitchell threw for 310 yards on 29-of-41 passing and three touchdowns in the victory and the Stamps’ defence held off a late rally from the Bombers led by quarterback Matt Nichols. If the Stamps want to continue to rise in the standings, and the Power Rankings, they’ll have to get through the BC Lions in Week 6 in a battle for the top of the West.

The Eskimos fell one spot in the Power Rankings this week after surrendering a 25-point lead to the Hamilton Tiger-Cats. The Esks defence was unable to contain Hamilton’s Jeremiah Masoli, and his CFL record of 23 straight completions, during the second half and fell 37-31. Edmonton will hope to take advantage of a struggling Blue Bombers club in Winnipeg in Week 6.

The BC Lions had a bye in Week 5 and stayed in the same position in the Power Rankings. Quarterback Jonathon Jennings and co. will hope to keep their winning streak alive and stay on top of the West when they take on the Calgary Stampeders in Week 6.

No lead is safe. The Eskimos surely know that now after the Hamilton Tiger-Cats came back from a 25-point deficit in the second half to pull out a 37-31 victory. Jeremiah Masoli will hope the confidence he found in Week 5, after completing 23 straight passes to set a CFL record, will continue when the Ticats come back from their bye week in Week 7.

The wait is over. The Toronto Argonauts won their first game at BMO Field this week, beating the Montreal Alouettes 30-17, but fell one spot in Power Rankings. Quarterback Ricky Ray left the game with what Head Coach Scott Milanovich is calling a possible sprained MCL, meaning the Argos could be without their veteran pivot for four to six weeks. Toronto takes on the REDBLACKS in Week 6.

The Roughriders nabbed their first win of the season this week against the REDBLACKS and their league leading offence, moving up one spot in the Power Rankings. Mitchell Gale will hope he and his Riders can continue winning in Week 6 when they take on the Montreal Alouettes.

The 1-4 Bombers will look to a different quarterback in Week 6 to try and get their season on the right track. Head coach Mike O’Shea announced that Matt Nichols, and not Drew Willy, will start under centre when Winnipeg takes on the Edmonton Eskimos next week.

The Alouettes were handed their third loss in a row in Week 5, falling to the Argos 30-17. Fortunately for the Als, their veteran quarterback Kevin Glenn returned to action after missing last week with an inflamed eye. Glenn and co. will be looking to snap their losing skid next week when they take on the Saskatchewan Roughriders.
