Nissan Titan Power Rankings: Rookie QB helps Als take flight

The Canadian Press

TORONTO — Another week, another Stampeder victory.

With Calgary’s 31-13 victory over the Toronto Argonauts last week, the Stamps finished their regular season home games with a perfect 9-0 record. That, along with their continued winning streak, have kept the Stampeders on top of the Nissan Titan Power Rankings.

The Montreal Alouettes moved up a single spot after rookie quarterback Vernon Adams Jr. led them to a victory in Regina but will they continue their rise? Meanwhile, the Hamilton Tiger-Cats also moved up after their overtime win in Ottawa.

Heading into Week 19, the Calgary Stampeders have to be feeling pretty good about themselves. On offence, the club is relying on both the ground and through the air – DaVaris Daniels caught two touchdown passes and 94 yards and Jerome Messam rushed for 111 yards on 10 carries in their win against the Argos last week. The team is also leading in almost every defensive category. Will they get a win in their final game of the season this week to finish 2016 with just a single loss?

The Bombers will be returning from their Week 18 bye hot off of back-to-back wins over the BC Lions. Winnipeg is currently tied in points with the Lions, meaning a win this week against the REDBLACKS is crucial to staying in second place ahead of their West Division foes.

BC snapped its two game losing streak last week with a win over the Edmonton Eskimos. Adam Bighill recorded his 100th tackle of the season, joining Solomon Elimimian as the first pair of teammates in CFL history to each record 100 tackles in a season. The Lions will need ‘Team 100’ to come out strong this week as they head to Regina to face the Riders.

Edmonton had its three-game winning streak snapped last week courtesy of the BC Lions. The Esks now head to Hamilton to take on the Tiger-Cats in what could be a playoff preview. As of right now, the Eskimos sit in the crossover spot and the Tabbies are in the second place in the East. But the season isn’t over yet and things could change over the next few weeks. All the Esks are worried about this week is a victory on the road.

The REDBLACKS were looking to widen the gap between themselves and the Tiger-Cats last week but a Ticat come back in the second half sent things to overtime where it was Hamilton that came out on top. Henry Burris looked stellar for the second week in a row for Ottawa, throwing for 418 yards and three touchdowns. The pivot also threw two interceptions – something that he’ll have to look to improve upon when his team heads to Winnipeg this week takes on the team that leads the league in picks.

Hamilton kept their shot at first place in the East alive with a double overtime win over the REDBLACKS. The Tabbies’ defence came out strong in the second half of the ball game, holding Ottawa to just six points. It  was John Chick who took down Burris in overtime that led to Brett Maher’s game winning field goal, bringing Hamilton within a single point of the top spot in the East Division.

Led by rookie quarterback Vernon Adams Jr., in his first CFL start, the Alouettes jumped back into the win column with a victory over the Riders. They’ll look to keep that momentum going when they host the red-hot Calgary Stampeders this week.

The Riders’ had their four-game winning streak snapped last week, falling 19-14 to the Montreal Alouettes. With just two games left in their 2016 season – they’ve already been eliminated from playoff contention – Saskatchewan will look to improve on their Week 18 performance when they host the Lions this week.

With a Hamilton win, and their own loss against the Stampeders, the Argonauts were officially eliminated from the playoffs last week. Ricky Ray, in his first start since being sidelined with an injury, threw for 311 yards and a touchdown while connecting on 28-of-42 passes. The Argos head into a Week 19 bye before returning to the field in Week 20 for their final game of 2016 against the Eskimos.
