Edmonton rising up Nissan Titan Power Rankings

Adam Gagnon/CFL.ca

TORONTO — The Stampeders’ streak has finally been snapped.

It was the Montreal Alouettes who defeated the Calgary Stampeders last week, handing them their first loss since Week 1 and denying them of tying the single-season wins record (16).

The Edmonton Eskimos moved up after coming back from a 10-0 deficit early in the contest to defeat the Tiger-Cats but will they continue their rise? Meanwhile, the BC Lions are also on the rise after their win in Regina in the final game at Mosaic Stadium.

The Stampeders lost just their second game of 2016 last week against the Alouettes. Drew Tate started under centre for the Stamps as head coach Dave Dickenson decided to rest starting pivot Bo Levi Mitchell for the week. Despite the loss, the Stamps still hold the season’s best record (15-2-1) as they head into a Week 20 bye, not returning to the field until the West Division Final.

The Lions’ offence roared over the Riders in the final game at Mosasic last week and BC’s defence held Saskatchewan to just two field goals. Solomon Elimimian led the defence with 10 defensive tackles and two sacks in the victory. The Leos play Saskatchewan in the second half of a home-and-home with the club and if BC wins or ties, they will clinch second place in the West and will host the Western Semi-Final.

The Eskimos fell behind early in Hamilton against the Tiger-Cats but they were able to come from back to defeat the Tabbies 29-26 last week and moved up a spot in the Power Rankings. If the Esks lose or tie this week against the Argos, they will crossover to play Hamilton in the Eastern Semi-Final. If they win, and the Bombers lose, they will play BC in the Western-Semi Final (as Edmonton would finish third over Winnipeg because of the tie breaker).

Winnipeg will have the chance for redemption against the REDBLACKS, who beat them just last week, as they hope to secure their spot in the West Division. This week, the Bombers could finish second, third or end up in the crossover spot, depending on Week 20’s results.

The REDBLACKS clinched first in the East for the second year in a row with their victory over the Blue Bombers last week. With Brad Sinopoli’s 73 yards receiving in the contest, Ottawa now boasts four receivers that have passed the 1000 yard mark – the first time in CFL history that the same four receivers have had back-to-back 1000-yard seasons.

With the Tiger-Cats loss, combined with the REDBLACKS win, last week, Hamilton will now host the Eastern Semi-Final. Last week, in Zach Collaros’ first game back since being sidelined with a concussion, the quarterback found chemistry with running back CJ Gable. Gable rushed for 55 yards and a touchdown while also catching nine passes for 88 yards in his team’s loss.

Rakeem Cato stepped in for Vernon Adams Jr., who left last week’s contest against the Stamps with an injury, and led his team to a win while also snapping Calgary’s winning streak. Cato connected on five-of-nine of his passes for 78 yards and a touchdown in relief while also taking off himself for a 73 yard run. While the Als have been eliminated from the playoffs, they are still looking to end their season on a high note when they head to Hamilton to take on the Tiger-Cats.

In the last game played at Mosaic Stadium, the Roughriders fell to the BC Lions 24-6. Darian Durant and co. won’t have long to dwell on the loss though as they face the same Lions team this week in BC. Saskatchewan will hope to finish their 2016 season with a win in Vancouver.

Coming off their Week 19 bye, the Argos will travel to Edmonton to take on the Eskimos this week. Ricky Ray will still be at the helm of the Argos’ offence as they head into their final game of 2016. The Toronto pivot will hope to lead his team to a win over the Esks to finish their 2016 campaign on winning note.
